Welcome to Mission Hills

Come for the unbeatable views, stay for the history and magnificent architecture of this resplendent hilltop neighborhood
Bordering the northeastern portion of the San Diego International Airport, the affluent neighborhood of Mission Hills is an uptown paradise replete with rich historic architecture and stately houses. Mission Hills is aptly named for its position perched atop rolling hills which peer out over Old Town, the Bay, and portions of downtown. Stunning vistas are just part of the appeal, however, and the comparative serenity of Mission Hills speaks to those ready for a quieter residential lifestyle.
Highly desirable, Mission Hills remains one of San Diego’s oldest neighborhoods. The covetable homes here span across the 20th and 21st centuries, with the bulk of homes dating back to the early 1900s. Lovingly kept and often restored to cater to modern desires, the properties in Mission Hills range from the pre-1940s Craftsman bungalows to mid-century Mediterranean estates and extravagant new-build mansions designed with entertaining and luxury in mind.

People & Lifestyle

Those looking to live in Mission Hills know exactly what they want: everything. The visual feast that comes from their position atop the hills — city, mountain, and ocean views? — is only the first indication that living in Mission Hills gives residents the best urban and rural living. A lack of heavy commercial presence keeps the area quiet, while its proximity to the airport and downtown San Diego’s bustle means you’re always just minutes away from a new adventure.

Dining, Shopping, & Entertainment

While Mission Hills itself is primarily residential, the neighborhood houses a large number of incredible restaurants and is a mere 10 minutes away from one of San Diego’s most reputable shopping centers: Fashion Valley. This upscale mall houses over 200 retailers, including premium brands such as Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Gucci, and Coach.
Your taste buds will certainly never be without variety in Mission Hills, and along India Street, you’ll encounter many of San Diego’s finest eateries. El Indio San Diego, for example, is renowned for its delectable authentic Mexican cuisine, served in a casual environment, and has been pleasing diners since the 1940s. Lucha Libre, whose name was inspired by the culture of Lucha Libre wrestling, takes traditional Mexican fare to an innovative level with their creative tacos crafted from only the freshest ingredients.
The selection is unbeatable at Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill, in part because the catches are hauled in exclusively by local fishermen. The menu includes items like sashimi and fish tacos all on the same page, a testament to the restaurant’s expertise in all things ocean-related. Locals flock to Gelato Vero Caffeé to fight the heat with a sweet, creamy serving of artisan gelato. The cafe also carries gourmet espresso drinks and heavenly pastries, which both pair well with a scoop of their famous flavors.

Things to Do

Mission Hills residents tend to enjoy their community by taking advantage of its many green spaces and parks. While some might choose to spend the days in quiet neighborhood spots like the Mission Hills Library, most venture out into nature for a day of sunshine and gorgeous views.
Pioneer Park, also called Mission Hills Park, is known for its picturesque, manicured landscape and is a popular spot for families thanks to the presence of a well-maintained children’s play area. Hikers will want to head to the Allen Road Trail Head, where they can enjoy a sweet descent down the hills and an escape from more suburban land.

Mission Hills is home to several excellent schools. Top educational opportunities include:
  • Birney Elementary, K-5, highly rated public elementary school
  • Old Town Academy, K-8, #2 public charter school in San Diego area
