Welcome to Del Mar

Make the golden sands of SoCal coast your front yard in Del Mar, the iconic beach destination with regal homes and European allure

White-capped waves and emerald waters lap against the golden sands of Del Mar before blending into lambent green hillsides and flower-dusted bluffs. A unique city resting along the sea, Del Mar exudes old-world charm and the elegance of European villages while offering award-winning retail and cuisine. It’s a city of luxury, where the powdery sand and upscale village shopping appeal to the vacationer in everyone.

Del Mar has a vibrant history, including a long reputation for being the go-to destination getaway for celebrities and Hollywood stars. The city wasn’t incorporated until 1959, but its inception in 1885 began with the vision of Colonel Jacob Taylor, who dreamed of developing a seaside resort for society’s upper echelon.

Architecturally, homes in Del Mar span across the 20th and 21st centuries to provide a great variety of styles, such as immaculate 1920s Mediterranean estates, awe-inspiring traditional beachfront properties, and lavish new builds designed by world-famous architects and perched up on the hills. Multimillion-dollar homes are the norm here, but the abundance of amenities and unparalleled beach access make these staggering residences worth it.

What to Love

  • Inspiring vistas and a gorgeous mix of SoCal terrains
  • The presence of the revered horse racing facility, The Del Mar Race Track
  • Coastal retreat away from the bustle of city living, but still only 25 minutes from San Diego

People & Lifestyle

Modern-day Del Mar has held true to its founder’s vision and remains one of the preeminent resort destinations in all of Southern California. The city houses one of the most affluent populations in the country, as evidenced by its astonishing homes and high-end boutique shopping village. In Del Mar, every day is an opportunity to enjoy the bounty of natural beauty offered by Southern California in a refined and luxurious way.

Dining, Shopping, & Entertainment

Del Mar is a mecca of upscale designer boutiques and stylish eateries, all surrounded by towering Monterey Cypress trees and tropical palms. Del Mar Plaza is a one-stop-shop where visitors can peruse both name brands such as Banana Republic and independently owned merchants like Urban Girl Accessories. One Paseo is another must-visit for retail enthusiasts, especially those who want to be at the forefront of fashion trends and appreciate the value of flagship stores.

Among the dining options in Del Mar are classic Southern California eateries like Jake’s Del Mar, which has been ranked among the most romantic spots in the city. Jake’s, in particular, is famous for its Hula Pie, a decadent treat consisting of macadamia nut ice cream, a thin chocolate crust, chocolate fudge, and whipped cream.

Seafood is a must in a coastal jewel such as Del Mar, if even for the freshness of daily catches alone. Brigantine is masterful when it comes to preparing the fruits of the ocean, and their unbelievably good oyster bar is just the tip of the iceberg on a menu brimming with surf n’ turf options. For something a little more casual, diners can head to Milton’s Deli, which blends house-made sandwiches and sides with an actual deli storefront, where customers can also purchase the highest quality meats to prepare their own at-home meals.

Things to Do

Del Mar embodies the quintessential California beach lifestyle with the bonus of additional diverse activity. The Del Mar Highlands Town Center, for instance, has coastal shopping and plenty of luxury brands, yet also hosts live music events and contains rooftop bars perfect for enjoying the low-key nightlife.

Outdoor enthusiasts can get their fill in Del Mar, and not just with the presence of resplendent beaches. The 125-acre San Dieguito County Park has a little something for everyone: 5 miles of great hiking trails, playground areas and sports fields, two suspension bridges, a wedding venue, and plenty of picnic space.

Two of Del Mar’s biggest attractions are contained within the same area, and the Del Mar Fairgrounds is also the site of the famed Del Mar Racetrack. The fairground is home to the annual San Diego County Fair, during which visitors are treated to an array of rides, animal shows, produce and food vendors, crafts, and live performances. The Del Mar Racetrack was built by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, whose founder was the famous Bing Crosby.

Del Mar is home to several excellent schools. Top educational opportunities include:

  • Del Mar Heights Elementary School, K-6, highly rated public high school
  • San Dieguito High School Academy, 9-12, highly rated public high school
