Life is more enjoyable with one’s pet. They are great company, are a fantastic way to befriend strangers, and make every experience all the more exciting. We’d like to take our pets everywhere, but it can be difficult to find accommodating places. Fortunately for visitors and residents of Cardiff by the Sea, there is a plethora of pet-friendly places in the area.
Cardiff by the Sea Lodge
If you have a smaller dog and are looking for a place to get a good night’s sleep, head to The Cardiff by the Sea Lodge. The lodge was founded in 1991 by well-known locals James and Janette. Seventeen rooms and suites are available to rent for the night, each adorned with its own unique theme. Seven bedrooms contain queen beds and overlook the hotel’s interior gardens, such as the French Garden, Summer, and Country Pine rooms. The highlight of the lodge is the Sweetheart Room, which boasts spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, a heart-shaped jacuzzi tub, and a fireplace. All rooms come with complimentary WiFi and flat-screen televisions with cable
There’s a weight limit maximum of twenty pounds for dogs, and their stay will come with additional fees. The pet-friendly rooms are subject to availability, so make sure to schedule a reservation to ensure your place.
Hampton by Hilton Encinitas Cardiff Beach Area
For larger dogs and their owners, Hampton by Hilton Encinitas Cardiff Beach provides appropriate accommodation. The hotel welcomes up to two pets weighing less than a hundred pounds each for an additional fee and has a grassy patch outside for pet use. Located less than ten minutes away from the dog-friendly Cardiff State Beach, the hotel is perfectly situated for owners and pets alike to enjoy the area.
Guests can indulge in amenities such as the outdoor pool, whirlpool, twenty-four-hour fitness center, and dry cleaning during their stay at the hotel. Look forward to a free hot breakfast every day, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
Cardiff State Beach
The Cardiff State Beach is a popular location for a breadth of activities, such as surfing, kiteboarding, snorkeling, sunbathing, and scuba diving. The beach borders Solana Beach and the Cardiff by the Sea area and has a reef on the Northern end. Dogs are allowed in all areas of the beach as long as they’re leashed and well-behaved. Lifeguards watch over the beach, so be sure to follow all posted pet rules.
Del Mar’s North Beach (Dog Beach)
For those willing to make the four-mile trip up the coast, Del Mar is home to North Beach, also known as the Del Mar Dog Beach. It’s the only beach where, with the exception of summer months, dogs can be off-leash and run freely. Take the trail up to an overlook at the James Scripps Bluff Preserve to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of sunsets over the ocean and a panoramic view of Del Mar.
Besta-Wan Pizza House
Bringing a furry companion when you dine out can be tricky, as most establishments won’t permit dogs in the dining room. Fortunately, there’s a place in Cardiff which allows you to bring your pooch with you to dine on their patio. Located in a quaint 1942 home, the Besta-Wan Pizza House has been welcoming visitors to the Aberdeen Drive location since 1965, making it the oldest operating restaurant in Encinitas.
Open for lunch and dinner every day of the week, Besta-Wan offers American, Italian, and Mexican food dishes alongside their famous pizzas. Appetizers such as Carne Asada Fries, Pot Stickers, and Bavarian Pretzels are a perfect first course before you dine on pizzas prepared according to the original recipes. Besides offering an impressively comprehensive menu, Besta-Wan Pizza House also offers dishes that are gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian.
Located on Liverpool Drive is a breakfast joint that’s touched the hearts of the locals and made a name for themselves with their surf theme. Featuring all-day breakfast fare, the restaurant also offers a “Party Pan menu,” where each dish listed serves ten to twelve people and is perfect for parties or corporate events.
Share large egg scramblers, potatoes, fruit, bacon, breakfast burritos, and large pots of coffee with your friends to start the day at Pipe’s Cafe. The espresso and smoothie bar also serves all your favorite drink options, along with açaí and granola bowls, and milkshakes with your choice of toppings. Eat indoors by yourself or bring your furry friend with you while you dine on the patio.

Cutting Edge receives referrals from veterinarians throughout the San Diego and Los Angeles area and is interwoven with nearby specialists. Incorporating the team approach, Cutting Edge has boosted the level of interaction between the client, the primary care vet, and whichever other practitioners are applicable. One-on-one home programs are also available to cater to your dog’s specific needs.
One of the center’s most notable features is its water amenities. The use of an underwater treadmill, pool safety classes, and dog swim lessons can promote weight management and strength conditioning for older dogs and those with injuries. The two pool sites utilized for these activities maintain a comfortably warm temperature year-round and can accommodate dogs of any age or injury with staff assistance.
Happy Tails Pet Salon
Sometimes your pet will need more than a simple bath at home and can use full grooming. If your dog comes along on your long hikes, there’s a likelihood they’ll come in contact with all sorts of dirt, wildlife, and allergens. Get your furry friend a deep cleaning at Happy Tails Pet Salon on San Elijo Avenue — a full-service grooming company that opened its doors in 2015. Cats and dogs alike can be groomed here, with nail clipping, de-matting, and teeth cleaning. Additional spa treatments offered include blueberry facials, de-skunking, and flea baths.
